The strips of asphalt between traffic lanes and street parking take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for trees, parking or sidewalks along Western Ave. Additionally, these buffer spaces give drivers the impression of wide, highway-like lanes and invite fast and loud traffic through this retail and residential corridor. This creates an especially dangerous condition as pedestrians often find themselves walking alongside traffic due to the lack of adequate sidewalks (see: Walkability Challenge #5). We can do better. How would you like to see this underutilized space transformed?
